Civil Society Case Study: The Refugee Support Association (MUDEM)

Supporting refugees in seeking fair working conditions

MUDEM has been conducting activities for and with refugees in Türkiye to equip them with relevant skills to access basic rights and services. Because so many refugees work in textile and apparel factories in Türkiye, MUDEM established a grievance mechanism tool for workers to report violations of their rights in these production facilities. Through this tool, they most commonly receive and manage issues of improper documentation, unfair wages, and maltreatment/discrimination in the workplace.

When these complaints are received, MUDEM first needs to identify which manufacturing facility the incident occurred in and which brands may be connected to that facility. They begin by asking the worker which brands are sourcing from that facility. In some instances, workers cannot share the brand names due to language barriers, or because the brand labels are not visible in the factory. In these cases, MUDEM will search for the facility in OS Hub to find brands sourcing from that facility. They also use OS Hub to verify or expand upon the information shared with them by workers. MUDEM then contacts the relevant brands to try to work together to find a solution.
